We thought that the Companion Cube from Portal was the only inanimate object that could truly be loved, but the revolutionary Sphero may be a close runner up.
This adorable globe of polycarbonate features an integrated gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass for navigating, and can be remote controlled with an iOS or Android device. The Sphero can roll around at full throttle (3 feet per second) for 60 minutes before needing a recharge using the wireless charging system.
In addition to a remote control app, a number of games will be available at launch on the App Store and Android Market. You can use your phone as a putter for golf, or use your finger to trace a path for the robot to take—and the tech-savvy will be able to create their own games using the open API. One of the most exciting possibilities is to pit Spheros against each other in an obstacle course.
The technology behind the device is impressive, and it’s exciting to see something so complex in a package so small. Motorized spheres are nothing new, but the combination of navigation hardware and intuitive software make the Sphero extremely unique.
The Sphero is now available for preorder, and will begin shipping in December for $129.99.
As the most programmable robot ever invented by mankind, Sphero is an incredible reinvention of the ball. And just like all the other balls you’re familiar with, Sphero’s purpose is to entertain. But he’s not filled with yarn or rubber. Instead, the programming is beyond most people’s understanding. Our developers poured their own blood, sweat, tears and infinite knowledge into the creation of this magical little sphere, and what we are left with is incredible; the first mass market robot with a navigational control system.
Will you be ordering the Sphero?
